Australia | Migration Program Planning Levels 2023-24

On May 9, 2023, the Australian Government announced that they will allocate 190,000 places for the 2023-24- Permanent Migration Program.

The 2023-24 Migration Program aims to tackle ongoing skills shortages and boost the economy in Australia. It focuses on attracting specialized skills that are hard to find or cultivate within the country.

This Program includes:

1. Skill Stream (1,37,100 places):- This stream helps boost the economy and fill skill shortages in the Labour Market.

2. Family Stream (52,500 places):- This stream mostly consists of Partner visas that allow Australians to reunite with family from abroad and help them become citizens.

Further, in this stream:-

For planning purposes, it is estimated that around 40,500 Partner visas will be available in 2023-24. It’s important to note that this category is driven by demand and there is no limit on the number of visas that can be granted.

3,000 Child visas will be available in 2023-24. It’s important to note that this category is based on demand and there is no limit to the number of visas that can be granted.

3. Special Eligibility Stream (400 places):- This stream includes visas for special situations like permanent residents returning to Australia from abroad.

Changes in Australia Immigration Policy 2023-2024:

Along with this, Australia is planning to make big changes to its immigration system to make it faster and easier to bring in highly skilled workers from other countries.

According to a statement by Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil- “Our migration system is broken. It is failing our businesses, it is failing migrants themselves. And most importantly, it is failing Australians. That cannot continue,”

It is planning to implement a system like Canada and Germany to attract more skilled migrants. This is because Australia is dealing with the ongoing issue of an aging population and needs skilled workers to meet the challenge. The plan also aims to make the process of getting permanent residency easier, with a focus on improving the system used to select skilled migrants, according to the federal Labor government.

Starting from July 1, the government has decided to increase the minimum migrant wage threshold of temporary skilled workers from $53,000 to $70,000, which is the first change since 2013.

A Path to Permanent Residency for Skilled Workers:

According to the announcement by the government – all skilled temporary workers will have the chance to apply for permanent residency by the end of the year 2023.  In this way, the system will be more targeted and efficient.

Three-tiered system for skilled workers:

The system will be divided into three tiers as follows-

– Light touch:- very skilled migrants with high salaries

-Mid-level cohort:- those who earn above the amount of temporary skilled migration income threshold

-Lower-wage cohort:- low earning migrants such as the caring sector

Along with this, the points test is used to select individuals with the right skills, but it will be modified to include candidates who are more beneficial to the Australian economy.
