IRCC now offers a new processing tool providing personalized estimates for permanent residence and citizenship applications. Get insight into queue-position and wait-time.
If you’re applying for Canadian permanent residence (PR) or citizenship, you’ll welcome the latest update from the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC): a revamped online processing times tool that goes beyond averages and gives you a clearer picture of where your application stands. This is a big step toward transparency in Canada’s immigration system — and for many applicants, it could reduce anxiety and help with planning.
What’s new: more than just averages
Previously, IRCC’s publicly-available processing times showed only average wait times for different application types. These averages did not account for when you submitted your application.
With the new tool update:
- You can answer whether you’ve already applied, and if yes, enter the date of application.
- The tool will then estimate:
- How much time is likely remaining until a decision is made, based on your submission date.
- How many people are ahead of you in the processing queue.
- How many people in total are waiting for that application type.
- If you haven’t yet applied, you can select “No” and the tool shows:
- Time you might expect if you apply today.
- The total number of people already waiting.
Example: A fictitious applicant under the Atlantic Immigration Program submitted in May 2025; by October 2025 the tool would show approx. 26 months remaining, with ~9,500 people ahead and ~13,100 total waiting. For a new applicator today: ~37 months waiting with ~13,100 total.
Which applications are eligible?
The update covers several major application categories, but not yet all. Here’s a breakdown:
Covered categories:
- Economic immigration programs such as:
- The Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP)
- Express Entry, including the Canadian Experience Class and Federal Skilled Worker Program
- Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
- Self-Employed Persons Program & Start-up Visa Program
- Family class sponsorship:
- Spouse or common-law partner living inside Canada.
- Spouse or partner living outside Canada.
- Parents and Grandparents Program.
- Citizenship:
- Grants of citizenship and issuance of citizenship certificates. Not yet covered:
- Sponsorship of dependent children, adopted children, or other relatives.
- Humanitarian & compassionate cases, refugee applications, and applications for replacing/amending documents.
Why this matters (and how you can use it)
Reduced uncertainty:
Applicants now get a personalised waiting time, not just a broad average. That aids planning — for example, knowing when you might receive your PR or citizenship decision.
Queue transparency:
Seeing how many people are ahead in the queue and how many are waiting overall gives more context — it’s not just “X months average,” it’s “X months left for you + Y people ahead.”
Strategic decisions:
If you haven’t yet applied, you can check how long you might wait if you applied today. That insight could inform when you submit, or which program you choose.
Better client advice (for agencies/consultants):
Immigration consultants, legal advisors and applicants alike can now provide/share more accurate expectations. This fosters better communication and fewer surprises.
Tips for applicants to get the most out of the tool
- Have your application date ready (if already applied).
- Be truthful when selecting “Have you already applied?” — the resulting estimate depends on it.
- Note that the tool’s estimate is just that: an estimate. Real processing times may vary because of document completeness, security checks, or program-specific factors.
- Use the estimate as a planning guide — when to update your living arrangements, make travel plans, or prepare for a new job/settlement.
- Stay alert for any further updates from IRCC — since future application types may be added.
The IRCC’s updated processing times tool marks a meaningful shift toward transparency and applicant-friendly servicing. If you’re applying for Canadian permanent residence or citizenship via one of the eligible programs, this tool can give you both a timeline and your place in the queue, helping you plan your next steps with greater confidence.
For those outside the covered application types, it’s worth keeping an eye on IRCC announcements — broader roll-outs may follow. In the meantime, use this new capability wisely, and stay organised for your immigration journey ahead.
