Canada’s Immigration Minister- Sean Fraser announced on Wednesday- 31st May 2023 the implementation of category-based selection draws for permanent residency (PR).
This will enable Canada to invite individuals with specific skills, training, or language abilities to apply for immigration. In turn, it will be helpful for the Canadian government to select the applicants with the most in-demand skills to be chosen for permanent residency, and meet the labor needs, and support French-speaking communities.
They will primarily focus on the Express Entry candidates who have the following:
– A strong French Language Proficiency
-A work experience in the following fields:
a) Healthcare
b) STEM professions i.e. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
c) Trades such as:- Carpenters, Plumbers, and Contractors
d) Transport
e) Agriculture and agri-food
To be eligible for benefits, applicants need to show that they have worked for at least 6 months in the past 3 years in a qualifying job.
Improving the Express Entry System:
This category-based selection will not only help meet the needs of the job market but also makes the Express Entry system more flexible and responsive.
This new approach follows Canada’s focus on attracting individuals with valuable skills and talents, which has been a key factor in the country’s successful immigration system.
According to the Honourable Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship- Sean Fraser- “Canada’s immigration system has never been more responsive to the country’s social or economic needs.”
Therefore, this is the first step towards a more responsive approach. Moreover, IRCC is expected to prioritize profiles based on the applicant’s desired location in Canada, although more details are yet to be announced.
