Between January and March 2023- (the first quarter), around 84,720 people from 212 countries became new Canadian citizens, according to the latest data provided by IRCC in May 2023.
In the first three months of this year, there were 11,487 fewer new Canadian citizens compared to the same period last year, which represents a decrease of 11.9%, but it was higher than the pre-pandemic levels.
However, in simple terms, it means that there has been a recent decrease in the number of people obtaining Canadian citizenship. This decline came after a year when many immigrants became citizens due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation improving.
The country has a special week called Citizenship Week that is celebrated every year from May 22 to 28.
“It is a great honor to participate in welcoming new members to our Canadian family,” said Immigration Minister Sean Fraser.
