Introduction :
Obtaining your Social Insurance Number, or SIN number, should be one of the first things you do after arriving in Canada. It should be done on priority because you cannot legally work in Canada unless you have a SIN.
It is mandatory for international workers, professionals, students, foreign employees, permanent residents, and citizens to have SIN Number to work in Canada.
In addition, a SIN is required to access government programs and benefits such as Employment Insurance (EI) and the Canada Pension Plan (CPP).
Permanent Residents often receive their SIN after passing through immigration at the airport or land border, although international students and foreign employees must apply after arriving in Canada.
‘Service Canada’ is in charge of issuing SINs, which are issued on paper (Confirmation of SIN letter). It remains still valid if there is a plastic SIN card that has not expired.
Furthermore, anytime you start a new employment, you must give your employer with your Canadian SIN.
SIN Application
In Canada, there is no price to apply for a Social Insurance Number, although there often huge lines outside Service Canada facilities.
In-Person Application
You can apply for a SIN in person at any Service Canada location. You may also make an appointment by filling out the online service request form. Online, you may obtain the application form.
You may also obtain the application form by visiting your local Service Canada Centre.
Submit the completed form, along with the appropriate documentation, to the Service Canada centre.
If you satisfy all of the conditions, you can receive your SIN on the same day you submit your application.
Permanent residents must provide their PR card. Within the first year of permanent residency, a letter of Confirmation of Permanent Residence is sufficient.
However, you must also bring your passport. You may also bring any other valid picture identification, such as a driver’s licence.
Online SIN application
If you apply for a SIN number online, you must provide a main document verifying your legal status and ability to work in Canada. You will also require a supplementary document to prove your identification.
A third document proving your address is also required. Once you have these documents, you may apply online at the SIN website of the government.
A PR card can be a primary document. If you arrived less than a year ago, your Confirmation of Permanent Residence (CoPR) is also valid.
You can utilise your job or study permit as a temporary resident. A passport, a provincial ID card, or a driver’s license can be used as supplementary papers.
You can use a government, financial, or educational institution addressed to you as evidence of address.
Indian citizenship
If you are a person registered under the Indian Act and wish to register your status in your SIN record, you must submit a Certificate of Indian Status issued by the Government of Canada together with the necessary documentation.
A newborn’s registration
If your infant is less than a year old and you have not registered your child’s birth with your province, you can apply for a SIN through your province’s infant Registration Service.
This service is currently available in all Canadian provinces but not in the territories.
Where can I obtain my SIN number?
By applying to Service Canada, you can obtain your SIN in person, online, or by mail (in some cases).
Temporary Resident’s SIN number
If your SIN starts with a “9,” keep your SIN record current. Check that your SIN expiration date matches the one on your Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada paperwork permitting you to work in Canada.
Ways to protect SIN card
Your SIN is confidential, and anybody else using it is unlawful. It is your responsibility to safeguard your SIN.
Never carry your SIN in your wallet or purse; instead, keep it in a secure location. Never use your SIN as a form of identification; instead, only offer it when legally necessary.
Furthermore, to avoid frauds, never give out your SIN number over the phone.
If your name or citizenship status has changed, or if your SIN record is incorrect or incomplete, please notify the SIN Programme as soon as possible.
You will receive a SIN with a new expiration date after your SIN record has been changed. Your prior SIN (whether in paper or plastic card format) is no longer valid. Destroy it in a safe way.
If your SIN has expired, you may continue to work as long as you maintain your status during the procedure.
